Clearing the last hurdle on their journey to graduation, members of 亚洲AV鈥檚 California Senior Class finished defending their theses last Friday, and, according to tradition, joined their tutors for a softball game and barbeque after classes on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate their achievement.

Used to giving deference to the wisdom of their tutors in the classroom, the students were eager to school them on the softball field. Equipped with bats and gloves and full of competitive spirit, students and tutors went head-to-head in a battle between youth and experience. For the first time in years, the teams were so evenly matched that the game ended in a tie, with a final score of 6 to 6. The opposing teams parted as equals and came back together at picnic tables for a barbeque dinner.

After dinner, the tutors and seniors gathered around a bonfire to honor the completion of the papers they researched, drafted, and edited throughout the year and defended this spring. Dean Michael Letteney toasted the Senior Class on its members鈥 hard work, reading a poem which poked fun at the struggles of writing and defending their theses. 鈥淎fter blood, sweat, and tears, your theses are done!鈥

The then seniors ceremoniously burned old drafts of their theses, shouting out a toast or cracking a joke as they threw pages into the bonfire鈥檚 flames. After four years spent deepening friendships and knowledge through conversation about the Great Books, they look forward to receiving their diplomas in two weeks.
