Both campuses of 亚洲AV went green this past weekend, as students took a much-appreciated break from their Lenten abstinences to celebrate the Feast of St. Patrick.

In California, the festivities took place Saturday night on the St. Glady Patio, where there was a firepit, food, and music to commemorate the feast. Student performers shared their talents with Irish ballads and upbeat jigs; their peers joining along in an Irish spirit. There were line dances, folk dances, the Virginia Reel, and more. Visiting alumna Brigit McNeil (鈥23) joined with freshman Brigid Wassel (鈥27) to play music for the dancers.

As the night neared its end, all gathered around the fire. They sang till the embers went dim, enjoying the music and each other鈥檚 company. 鈥淏eing able to dance with everyone to live music was one of the best parts,鈥 remarked Gianna Gutierrez (鈥26). 鈥淚t was so fun to see everyone so happy.鈥 Added James Blewett (鈥24), 鈥淚t was great seeing all the different classes come together, dancing and celebrating St. Patrick.鈥

The next day in New England, loads of green-clad, Irish cap-wearing students and faculty families celebrated a St. Patrick鈥檚 Day party of their own in the Bl. Frassati Student Center.

Everything was covered in green and shamrocks in honor of the great patron of Ireland. For entertainment, a large group of students played and sang traditional Irish folk songs, encouraging the crowd to sing along and clap with the music. Anna Mae Hinkle (鈥24) and Cecilia Macik (鈥27) amazed the crowd with three Irish step dance routines, a first for the New England campus.

After the music and dancing came time for the Irish soda-bread competition. All manner of soda bread was on the judging table, including traditional Irish recipes, sourdough varieties, and even one sans raisins. The judges carefully sampled each entry during the musical performances, debating over texture and tastiness. Finally, they announced the best overall winner: a loaf baked by Helen Hoff (鈥27) and second-time winner Cecilia Alvarez (鈥24).

鈥淚 was really surprised to win again,鈥 said Cecilia. 鈥淗elen and I had a lot of fun baking it together, so I鈥檓 glad it turned out well!鈥
